Jean Rae Baxter
Jean Rae Baxter is the descendant of settlers who arrived in New France in the 17th century, Loyalists who came here in the 1780s, and immigrants from Germany in the 19th century. There were many family stories to awaken her interest in writing about Canada’s history.
Jean Rae Baxter’s previous novels have been Canadian Book Centre “Best Books for Kids and Teens.” She received the Hamilton Arts Council Award for Young Adult Literature and the City of Hamilton Heritage Award. Her books have been shortlisted for the Ontario Library Association’s Red Maple Award and British Columbia’s Stellar Award. In the U.S., she won the Gold, Silver and Bronze Moonbeam Awards, and received an Honourable Mention at Boston’s New England Book Festival.
In preparation for writing, she likes to travel to the places where her novels are set. For The Knotted Rope, she visited the Cave of the Winds behind Niagara Falls several times, and experienced the wall of falling water, the wind and the thunderous noise. She visits many schools and libraries to talk about Canadian history and conduct creative writing and family history writing workshops.
